See San Francisco from a new side
The 49 mile drive is a route around downtown San Francisco, established in 1938 by the Downtown Association to tell people about San Francisco as a tourist vacation spot through the time of the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939-1940. As the majority of comparable routes it has transformed several times over the years, and yet it continues to serve the fundamental intent of displaying San Francisco at its finest.
The drive is scenic and shows a mixture of areas with diverse architectural styles and sights, it is a great way to successfully get to know San Francisco without spending the whole day in the midst of other tourists. A lot of people that live in the Bay Area that take this route for the first time experience that they have in fact got to discover a brand new side of the city.
The route sets off over at City Hall (by the intersection of Hayes Street and Van Ness Avenue) and takes you right past attractions like Museum of Modern Art, Japantown, China town, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Pier 39, Fishermans Wharf, The Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Haight-Ashbury together with the Twin Peaks. The whole journey normally takes a minimum of 4 to 5 hours by car, plus it takes you past some areas which demands additional time, preferably on foot (for instance Chinatown as well as the Fishermans Wharf with Pier 39).
